MICROFLUID SPERM SORTING CHIP (Sperm Chip)

MICROFLUID SPERM SORTING CHIP (Sperm Chip)

Microfluidic sperm extraction (sperm chip) method is a sperm preparation and selection method used for ICSI (Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection), which is the first step in IVF treatment. Even in patients with sufficient sperm count for IVF treatment, increased DNA damage may be present in sperm parameters, resulting in decreased fertilization rates and pregnancy losses.

The mechanisms that cause sperm DNA fragmentation in today's conditions are as follows;
1. Cell death or anomalies that may occur during the sperm production process,
2. The formation of sperm DNA breaks during the transport of the sperm cell through the channels and the DNA fragments causing the formation of free oxygen radicals (ROS),
3. Damage to sperm DNA by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and environmental toxins,

The most important point to be emphasized is: Patients who need IVF treatment are likely to have higher DNA damage in their sperm. Recent studies have shown that DNA damaged sperm are associated with pregnancy losses after IVF treatment.

In the light of this information, it is important to extract the damaged sperm to be used during IVF treatment and ICSI procedure and to select suitable quality sperm for ICSI.

Benefits of the sperm chip method:
- Sperm chip process does not require centrifugation. In this way, it prevents the increase of ROS (free oxygen radical). It enables the selection of sperms that are not damaged in terms of ROS and DNA fragmentation.

- Sperm chip, which is the closest sperm selection method to nature, is prepared based on the passage of sperm through the cervical canals. The spermchip method allows the selection of sperms for ICSI with the best DNA quality and physiology as they pass through the micro channels.

NOTE : This method cannot be used in cases where the sperm count is very low and sperm motility is very low. In addition, it is not suitable for use in cases where sperm is obtained from the testis with TESA/TESE methods.
